Yoga and Tai Chi Class Descriptions

 

Mindful Movement

Join Jessica Barnes Smith on Mondays at 6:30 for a yoga class designed specifically for active duty service members, veterans and their spouses. In this class the emphasis will be on grounding, breath awareness, mindful movement, and meditation utilizing Mindful Resilience methods from the Veterans Yoga Project with a focus on giving the practitioner self regulation strategies that can be used to overcome the effects of chronic stress, pain, and PTSD.These strategies have been reported to help veterans and active duty service members to sleep better, experience less anger, anxiety and depression, and generally help cope with the various symptoms of PTSD. This class will also apply Mind Body Solutions' Universal Yoga Principles that help reveal the felt inner experience of each pose that holds true for all bodies, aiming to gain a greater connection between mind and body that can help with improved comfort and ease, regardless of the students condition, age, or ability.

 

Tai Chi

No matter what form of Tai Chi is practiced, if specific instructions are incorporated, the results will be improved health of Mind and Body for better balance and reduced falls. The three basic principals are Movement Control, Weight Transference and Integration of Mind and Body.

iRest (Integrative Restoration) Yoga Nidra

If you are fatigued on a level you cannot adequately explain, consider iRest.

iRest is short for "Integrated Restoration," a brain science-based, secular, modern day modality of Yoga Nidra. This deep conscious rest practice is for any service member and/or their spouse and is FREE. Commissioned by the Department of Defense in 2006, it is practiced by active duty military personnel and veterans who live with PTSD, TBIs and other post-combat related injuries. It's also for anyone who has endured trauma on any level, those who's nervous system could use a reboot, those who struggle with chronic pain, insomnia, depression or anxiety, or anyone who simply wants to feel more like themselves again. Read more at iRest.org or try it for yourself with our trained staff on Tuesdays from 5:30-6:30 PM.

 

Gentle Yoga for Anxiety

Anxiety can manifest itself in variety of ways--physically, mentally and emotionally. Proven and helpful means of coping with anxiety include breath work, mindful movement, progressive physical relaxation, meditation and visualization. Yoga is a practice that employs all of these techniques. Consider this class to gain additional tools to manage the symptoms of anxiety, fear, and panic attacks, to ground yourself, and to encourage a calm mind. An all-levels class, it is great for both those new to yoga as well as experienced yogis.

Flow & Restore Yoga

A Hatha based yoga class that includes traditional asana postures, breathing practices and relaxation techniques that are great for all levels. The class begins with gentle flowing asana postures that focus on alignment, balance and breath control. The class ends with a guided form of systematic relaxation and meditation including Yoga Nidra. It is a great mix of physical movement as well as rest and relaxation.

 

Yoga 101: A Primary Practice

This weekly class features the fundamentals of yoga. It is great as an introduction for those new to yoga, as a refresher for those who have been away from the mat for awhile or as a way to get back to the basics and revisit the primary elements of hatha yoga.
